You've Got A Friend

Carole King
1971

I am the product of a large Irish clan and my world view, I suppose, was shaped by that simple fact. Yet, for whatever reason, the fates long ago determined I would never start my own family, nor become someone’s husband or father.

For that reason (and, of course, me being the always-willing-to-adapt guy my parents taught me to be), I began to view my friends as more than just a circle of onetime classmates, wingmen, compadres, drinking buddies and acquaintances.  Over the years, my friends became (and are, to this day), quite literally, my family.  That’s why, even now, when they hurt, I hurt. And when they’re happy, my heart sings.

This 1971 song (especially this version by its composer) has long served as the unofficial anthem of that part of me.  And listening to it has gotten me through more than my share of broken hearts and dreams along the way, while helping me make it through more than a few dark and lonely nights.

Enjoy, my friends. And more than any other song on this ever-expanding soundtrack of my life…this one’s for you.
